The Japanese Society for Disability and Oral Health (公益社団法人 日本障害者歯科学会), or JSDH, provides a nationwide search tool to help families find dentists who are trained to treat people with disabilities. This can be an invaluable resource for parents, as many children cannot be treated at a typical dental clinic. An ordinary dental office may not be equipped to support a child who cannot sit still, is overwhelmed by the sounds and sensations of treatment, or finds it difficult to cooperate during a dental examination or cleaning. The search tool lists clinics, hospitals, and oral health centers where a JSDH-certified dentist is available, making it easier to find appropriate care for children with autism, cerebral palsy, an intellectual disability, or complex medical needs.

The search is simple to use. Select a prefecture from the map to view participating facilities in that area. Each listing explains the types of patients the facility can treat, including children and adults, people with whole-body medical conditions, and those who need feeding and swallowing (摂食) support. Listings also indicate which sedation options are available, including inhaled nitrous oxide (吸入鎮静法, laughing gas), intravenous sedation (静脈内鎮静法), and full general anesthesia (全身麻酔). For many children who would otherwise be unable to complete dental treatment, these options can make a significant difference. The listings also show whether the facility has certified specialists, certified dentists, or certified dental hygienists on staff.

There are a few practical things to keep in mind before making an appointment. Because special needs dentistry is highly specialized and each patient’s situation is different, a clinic may not be able to accept every case. Calling ahead is recommended rather than arriving without an appointment. The directory is updated only once a year, and some certified staff work part-time, so they may not be available every day.
