Nissinren (Japan Federation of the Physically Disabled)

Nissinren (社会福祉法人 日本身体障害者団体連合会) is a nationwide federation of organizations representing people with physical disabilities across Japan. Rather than providing services in a single city or prefecture, it brings together local disability organizations to advocate for the rights, inclusion, and participation of people with physical disabilities at the national level. For families of children or adults with physical disabilities, it is an important organization to know, both as a source of information and as a gateway to local member organizations and support networks.

Much of Nissinren’s work is carried out through the Central and Regional Centers for Promoting Social Participation of Persons with Disabilities (中央・地方障害者社会参加推進センター), which operate throughout Japan to support people with disabilities in participating more fully in community life. The organization also coordinates a nationwide network of disability consultation counselors (身体障害者相談員), holds an annual national convention, conducts research and surveys, and participates in government committees that help shape disability policy. In addition, it publishes newsletters, handbooks, and practical resources, including a pocket guide for disability consultation counselors, to support those working with people with physical disabilities across the country.
