DPI Japan (Disabled Peoples’ International Japan)

DPI Japan (認定NPO法人 DPI日本会議) is a cross-disability advocacy organization, the Japan council of the international Disabled Peoples’ International network. Rather than serving one condition, it brings together grassroots groups across many kinds of disability to push for a society where everyone can live with hope and dignity. For a parent, this is less a service you sign up for and more a movement working on the conditions your child will grow up inside: accessible buildings and transit, the right to live in the community rather than an institution, inclusive education, and protection from discrimination.

Its work spans community living, barrier-free access, rights protection, inclusive education, employment and income security, disabled women’s issues, disaster support for disabled people, and full implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Much of what DPI produces is practical for families following policy: plain-language summaries of national meetings, reports on how the adult guardianship (成年後見) system is changing, and a monthly roundup of the hearings, public comments, court cases, and events worth watching. It also runs disability discrimination peer support (差別解消ピアサポート), trains disabled people as barrier-free leaders, and publishes guides written from a disabled person’s own point of view.

If you care about the bigger fight behind the day-to-day paperwork, DPI is one of the strongest disabled-led voices in Japan to follow. It is a certified NPO based in Tokyo, and it works nationwide through its member organizations.
