If your family’s insurance card comes from Kyokai Kenpo, this is the organization behind it. The Japan Health Insurance Association (全国健康保険協会), known to almost everyone as Kyokai Kenpo (協会けんぽ), provides the health coverage for people who work at small and medium-sized companies, along with their spouses and children. If your partner works somewhere that does not run its own insurance society, chances are this is your family’s insurer. It is worth knowing a little about, because it quietly sits behind so much of what you do as a parent, from a quick trip to the pediatrician to the relief of a capped bill after a hospital stay.

Kyokai Kenpo handles the practical side of your coverage. It provides high-cost medical expense coverage (高額療養費), which caps what a family pays when medical costs run high, injury and sickness allowance (傷病手当金) for income lost to illness, and childbirth allowance (出産手当金), along with the forms to claim each one. It also covers annual health checkups, sets out how to keep your health insurance after leaving a job, and manages the switch to the My Number insurance card (マイナ保険証) that now replaces the older card at medical counters.

Because it operates through a branch in every prefecture, families deal with their own local office for questions and paperwork, and the site links through to each one.

Most of what you need is handled at your local prefectural branch rather than the Tokyo head office. The main site is in Japanese, but it also has a plain “easy Japanese” (やさしい日本語) version and a few other languages, so it is more approachable than most government-linked sites when you are trying to make sense of your coverage.
